Deputy Prosecuting Attorney – Civil Litigation

The Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office, Lafayette, IN, is hiring a full-time deputy prosecutor . Duties will include post-conviction relief, petitions to revoke probation, civil forfeitures, Laird Law hearings, petitions for expungements, and sentence modifications. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Indiana.

Salary Range: $106,603 – $125,000

2027 Summer Legal Internship

As a 2027 Summer Legal Intern, a law student would learn the everyday duties of a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney.  A Summer Legal Intern would assist in research projects involving questions surrounding criminal law; assist in preparing attorneys for trial; assist in reviewing and preparing discovery; attend and observe multiple court proceedings and hearings such as initial hearings, pre-trial conferences, bond reduction, evidentiary, sentencing, probation revocation, motions to suppress, criminal jury trials and other hearings and trials; be involved in analyzing and reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of a criminal case; and assist in other projects involving pro-active community prosecution.

As a 2027 Summer Legal Intern, a law student would be assigned an initial research issue upon starting followed by other research issues as assigned by major felony trial attorneys; a summer project; and a final presentation on a topic involving criminal law.

As a 2027 Summer Legal Intern at the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office you will have the following additional opportunities: participate in various rotations through all of the prosecutor’s office divisions throughout the summer observing our workflow and case preparation by attending court and various meetings with major felony trial deputy prosecuting attorneys, attend and observe an autopsy at the Coroner’s Office, use the prosecutor’s office workout facility, be involved in investigative and intelligence briefings with staff of the prosecutor’s office or other law enforcement officers or agents, learn about the programming of and tour Tippecanoe County Community Corrections, learn about and tour the Tippecanoe County Jail, get a personal tour of our historic Tippecanoe County Courthouse, learn about the job of the Victim Assistance Unit including understanding the rights crime victims possess under the Indiana Constitution, attend and observe depositions, participate in gang identification training, participate in illegal narcotic identification and covert drug investigation training, observe major felony jury trials, actually try infraction and misdemeanor traffic offenses as a certified legal intern, learn about and observe the Tippecanoe County High-Tech Crime Unit’s Electronics Detective K9 Roger perform his duties, attend gun safety class and travel to and participate in a qualification round at the gun range used by area law enforcement agencies, tour the state-of-the-art Lafayette Public Safety Building, attend multiple internal trainings including summer legal updates, learn about the Probation Department, learn about chain of custody and evidence room management at a local police department, observe police K-9 training, attend local Child Fatality Review Team meetings, attend local Sexual Assault Review Team meetings, attend a Heartford House Child Advocacy Center forensic interview, among other opportunities.

The Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office has a staff of 31 full-time deputy prosecutors and a full staff of nearly 80 dedicated team members including a High-Tech Crime Unit with digital forensic examiners.

Pay is $20.00-25.00/hour
